Dr. Orihel was co-awarded an NSERC Alliance Advantage Grant for the project “Optimizing oil spill countermeasures for Pacific salmon rivers”, in partnership with Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Wonderful news that all of our PhD students received scholarships for 2024-2025. Katryna Seabrook and Sam Gene were awarded Ontario Graduate Scholarships and Jihyun Kim was awarded the Franklin and Helene Bracken Fellowship.

Congratulations to Paul Iyare (MES’23) on his new publication in Arctic Science from his thesis research entitled “An assessment of microplastics in fecal samples from polar bears (Ursus maritimus) in Canada’s North“. This project was in collaboration with BearWatch.

MSc student Yael Lewis did a stellar job today defending her MSc thesis on the effects of microplastics on zooplankton and emerging insects. This research is part of the pELAstic Project.

Wonderful to see the first experimental paper out from the pELAstic Project: “Informing the Exposure Landscape: The Fate of Microplastics in a Large Pelagic In-Lake Mesocosm Experiment”. A photo of this experiment made the front cover of Environmental Science & Technology!
